Great News for Transgenic Pig Organ Research

How a family's choice to donate a body for pig kidney research could help change transplants. The donated brain-dead body is on life support while they monitored the implanted pig kidneys for immune damage. The kidneys have lasted one month by now, going into the critical second month, doing well. The body is on immune suppressants, as usual protocol for xenotransplant experiments. The transgenic pig only had one protein knocked out, as opposed to the other research groups knocking out multiple genes.

Wonder if it was the Alfa-Gal gene they knocked out. Either way, this is wonderful news for the transgenic pig research. More of this type of dead experiments are necessary. Current models are not sophisticated enough for xenotransplant experiments.
