South Africa and Lesson in Reform

South Africa assessment 1 year after riots by the pro-Zuma faction after his corruption conviction. People believe that Ramphosa cannot reform the former liberation party ANC. The rolling black outs ("load shedding") is a visible and persistent reminder of South Africa's structural problems.

This is a lesson that Reform doesn't work at solving the problem. If the organization had the capacity to fix itself, it would have done so right away. The fact that people have to talk about "reform", means it can't fix itself. This is why organizations often stand up new sub-organizations to deal with new problems. Or the conflict is severe enough to get rid of much of the Old Guard, permitting the Organization to essentially rebirth itself during a war.

This article is also another reminder that a Democracy is always ready to shed its democratic consensus, to solve disputes by the force of arms. Any moment people take to the streets, Democracy has failed, and conflict starts.

And South Africa will soon reach Mexico-level of low-grade failed state.
